Work shoes for the pharmaceutical industry & laboratories – hygiene, comfort and ESD safety

Work shoes for the pharmaceutical industry & laboratories - hygiene, ESD and safe footing
The pharmaceutical industry, biotech and laboratories have significantly higher demands on footwear than most other industries. Here it is not only about comfort and non-slip properties, but also about controlled hygiene, ESD/antistatic protection and materials that withstand frequent cleaning and disinfection. At Imagewear.dk we have selected work shoes that combine low weight, non-marking SRC outers and closed, easy-to-clean uppers - so that employees in clean rooms, QC laboratories, production and packaging can move safely and efficiently.
Departmental requirements vary: In cleanrooms particle control and ESD are often mandatory; in QC/development labs shock absorption and closed design are key; in production and packaging slip resistance and maintenance are prioritized, while internal logistics may require ESD and shoes that work on smooth industrial floors. We help you standardize across departments – without compromising local SOP requirements.
GMP & cleanrooms: what does it mean for footwear?
Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and cleanroom procedures require equipment, clothing and personnel behavior. Footwear must support controlled particle release and be easy to clean to minimize cross-contamination. In practice, this means:
- Closed uppers without unnecessary seams - fewer joints, fewer places where dirt and particles can settle.
- Smooth, dry surfaces (microfiber/coated) that withstand alcohol and mild disinfection according to SOP.
- Non-marking SRC outer that does not discolour light floors and at the same time provides a secure grip on wet/cleaned surfaces.
- Dedicated pairs per zone (e.g. cleanroom vs. support areas) to avoid transfer. Use colour coding or clear markings.
ESD & antistatic: when and why?
In many cleanrooms and laboratories, ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) or antistatic footwear is a requirement. The purpose is to protect products, process equipment and measuring instruments against static electricity. Choose models that are documented ESD/antistatic, and combine them with ESD-approved socks/routines where the SOP requires it. For support functions without ESD requirements, antistatic is usually sufficient, while for example QA/QC in electronics-heavy laboratories may require full ESD control.
Material selection: comfort, durability and hygiene
- Upper material: Microfiber and coated synthetic leather are popular in cleanrooms and laboratories because they are easy to wipe, withstand frequent cleaning and retain their shape. Mesh can be used in non-critical zones for extra breathability.
- Outsole (SRC): PU or TPU with non-marking properties and patterns that wick away moisture. SRC provides the highest level in the step test and is recommended on smooth, cleaned floors.
- Midsole: PU/EVA with rebound for shock absorption over long shifts. Lightweight reduces fatigue and improves the gait cycle.
- Insole: Replaceable, breathable and possibly antibacterial. Replace every 3-6 months with daily use to maintain shock absorption and hygiene.
- Closure: Slip-in/easy-close toe minimizes dirt traps and allows for quick on/off when changing zones. Laces/quick-lace provides a fine-tuned fit during long shifts.
Selection guide by function
Cleanroom (production, filling, packing)
Select closed, smooth overshoes, SRC and ESD according to requirements. Non-marking protects floors. Consider dedicated shoes per classified zone as well as clear marking and storage in cleanroom wardrobes.
QC and development laboratories
Here comfort and hygiene go hand in hand. Choose closed, easy-to-clean shoes with shock absorption and a stable heel cap. ESD is recommended where instruments/equipment are sensitive.
Manufacturing & packaging (unclassified)
Focus on SRC, low weight and durability. Choose non-marking soles and materials that can withstand frequent cleaning. Where there is a risk of sharp objects in the workshop/depot, selected safety shoes with toe caps may be locally relevant.
Internal logistics & support
Many steps and quick changes of direction require shock absorption, stable heels and SRC. ESD is selected according to zone requirements. A shoe that does not hang on the steps increases safety when frequently jumping from zone to zone.
When does toe cap make sense?
Most functions in the pharmaceutical industry can do without toe caps. Exceptions may be technical service, maintenance, warehouse/depot and workshopwhere the risk of impact/pressure is real. If this is the case, please see our pages for transport & warehouse and light industry (selected safety shoes). Keep safety shoes separate from cleanroom footwear according to SOP to avoid contamination.
Everyday comfort = retention and performance
The right footwear provides fewer interruptions, higher well-being and better productivity. Look for anatomical inserts with arch support, heel rebound, and a fit with space in the toe box, so that the toes can work naturally. Wear sweat-wicking socks without rough soles; in cold zones, an insulating insole or a half size up can increase comfort.
Washing and cleaning routines (SOP)
- Daily wiping: Remove residual liquids/chemicals immediately. Wipe with approved products according to SOP.
- Air Drying: Avoid direct heat; high temperatures can damage adhesives and upper materials.
- Insoles: Remove and air dry; replace every 3-6 months with daily use.
- Rotation & Zones: Two pairs per employee allows for full drying and clean zoning.
- Inspection: Check soles, stitching, and heel caps regularly; replace if grip is lost or damaged.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does cleanroom footwear need to be ESD-approved?
Yes, in many cleanrooms and laboratories, ESD or antistatic footwear is a requirement to protect products and equipment. Check your SOP and quality management.
Can the same shoe be used in multiple zones?
Usually no. To avoid contamination, zone-separated pairs are recommended (e.g. cleanroom vs. support). Color coding and clear marking make everyday life easier.
Why non-marking soles?
Non-marking prevents black streaks and discoloration on light floors - important in laboratories, clean rooms and QC areas.
Slip-in or lace-up in the laboratory?
Slip-in minimizes dirt traps and is quick when changing zones. Lace-up/quick-lace provides a fine-tuned fit during long shifts.
When are safety shoes necessary?
In technical service, maintenance, depot/workshop or where there is a risk of impact/pressure. Keep safety shoes separate from cleanroom footwear according to SOP.
How often should shoes be replaced?
For daily use typically every 12-18 months. Replace earlier if grips fall off, seams are damaged or if materials are affected by cleaning agents.
